Summer Camps

There's no doubt about it: summer is upon us. Kids are more antsy than ever as the weather outside has turned from gray skies and freezing temperatures to blue skies and warmth. And as this school year begins the process of wrapping up, there is frequently a big question mark about summer plans.

An organization in New York City called Resources for Children with Special Needs creates several wonderful resources for parents, one of which is their guide to camps. Camps 2009-2010 is the 25th edition of this particular guide and is filled with a wealth of information to get you started on your search for what could be the ideal camp for your child. For each camp, the guide provides contact information, camp location, service description, fee information, and available accommodations. The camps listed include both day programs and sleep-away programs.

With over 300 camps listed in the Metropolitan New York Area, it can at first seem a bit daunting. However, it is well organized and very easy to use. You can search the index by service or by condition. For example, you can search for a list of sleep away camps, or look at a list of camps for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Finally, the book includes other useful resources, such as: questions to ask when choosing a camp, academic remediation and job training opportunities for teens, social and recreational programs, travel programs, summer tutoring options, and volunteer opportunities. And did I mention there is also a Spanish-language version?

You can order the book online here, or you can visit their office at 116 East 16th St on the 5th floor. There you are free to peruse the Camps guide or any of the other resources they have available. Their staff is also friendly and knowledgeable. All in all, it is a wonderful organization to be familiar with because of the wealth of trainings and resources they provide, and hopefully their guide to camps will be an important step in providing your child with new activites, social opportunities, and friendships.
